Transportation and Logistical Info for Wow 2

by Jenny Meadows last modified 2006-05-25 07:47 PM

Information on lodging and transportation, including ideas from last year, Registration team needed, suggested travel times, WOW 1 team, and web links to MARTA, Cohutta Springs Conference Center and Southeastern Expeditions (SEE).

LODGING/TRANSPORTATION SHEET
When we get a bit closer to WOW we will post a lodging/transport sheet for all participants. For the international travelers, we will find as many host homes as possible or suggest some reasonable places to stay before and after WOW 2. Most of the time all of the lodging for WOW 2-ers is covered by host homes.

Atlanta has a MARTA train that you can use from the airport to various locations in Atlanta if you are arriving early or staying late. For more information, MARTA’s website is www.itsmarta.com.

TRANSPORT TO & FROM COHUTTA SPRINGS

It is a part of your training to arrange your transport to and from Cohutta Springs. The reason we don't provide a bus for WOW 2 is that you will also need to travel from Cohutta Springs to the river and then back to Atlanta. This means we will need a certain number of cars and/or vans to transport people during the training.

There is also a shuttle service that Kairos uses from Atlanta. This shuttle service can take people, especially those traveling at odd times, to Cohutta Springs. Their name is Sir Ellison and their phone number is 404-244-8262. I will publish more details on this later.

IDEAS FROM LAST YEAR
Last year we had a very creative bunch who rented a 15-person van and had quite a jolly time riding together from Atlanta to the venue, to the river, then back to Atlanta. This requires some organization among the participants in terms of travel times, pick-up and drop-off.

We also had several groups that rented cars together, or some people who were driving in to WOW 2 from Alabama or other places swooped by the airport or other locations and picked up participants. For safety, we recommend that people familiar with driving in the US be the designated drivers.

REGISTRATION
Between 12 to 15 people that are attending WOW 2 are needed to come to Cohutta Springs right after lunch on Friday, June 23rd, to help set up and attend to registration. Those on the registration team will be given dinner at Cohutta Springs before registration. We have had as many as 24 people helping at registration, leaving very few to register!

Dreena Tischler, Logistics Coordinator, will be collecting names for the registration team until a Resource Coordinator is named.   You can reach her at Dreena.Tischler@moretolife.org.  The WOW 2 team will also assist in organizing travel during WOW 2. Once everyone is at Cohutta Springs, the WOW 2 team will get information from you about number of cars, leaving times, etc., and they will help organize how the group will be traveling to the river and at the end of the course.

DINNER ON FRIDAY, JUNE 23rd
Unless you are on the registration team, dinner on Friday, June 23rd, is your responsibility. There are numerous places to eat in Crandall, Georgia, which is only a few miles from Cohutta Springs.

SUGGESTED TRAVEL TIMES
Please allow at least 2-1/4 hours travel time from the Atlanta Airport to Cohutta Springs (in Crandall, Georgia). Registration starts at 6:00 pm on Friday, June 23rd. NOTE: The traffic in Atlanta can be very heavy at rush hour.

Consider allowing at least two hours from Southeastern Expeditions back to the Atlanta airport. You could comfortably leave the Expedition outpost by 10:30 am on Friday, June 30th. (You could leave earlier if you must, but you will probably want to take your time with goodbyes, etc.)

The Atlanta airport is large. I suggest you arrive 2 hours before your flight if you are traveling within the US and 3 hours if you are traveling overseas.

WOW 1 TEAM
If you plan to be on the WOW 1 team, you will travel back to Cohutta Springs for some rest and preparation. This extra day’s lodging and meals are covered in your team fees.
